Tips on Raising Active Children

5 Great Tips on How to Raise Active Children

As we understand, an inactive way of life is ruining our children's wellness. Obesity, Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and blood pressure issues are escalating in today's youngsters. While playing a lot of computer game and viewing too much TV are primarily to blame, we as moms and dads are eventually liable by not doing enough to motivate our kids off the couch to go outside to play and get exercise.  If you are at a loss as far as how to do that, here are five methods to get your kids moving:

1.  Establish electronics usage and play times.

When we were growing up, we always had an athletics class while in school.  Now schools don't have that course any longer, so as moms and dads we have to substitute with something else.

Instead of having your kids sitting on the couch after supper playing video games, turn them off and rather go for a household walk or bike trip. This simple activity will not only be good for your children, but also for you. Here's another tip: Consider signing your children up for an after school sport in something they prefer to do. Essentially, help them find anything to help them obtain more physical activity.

2.  Motivate exercise by offering gifts that promote it.

For birthdays or Christmas, include a gift that will certainly get their heart rate up, like a jump rope, tennis racquet, baseball glove, and so on. The use of their new present requires exercising!  See the connection?

3. Enlighten your kids on the advantages of working out.

Explain why going with a hike, a walk or playing in the park is good for them. Emphasize the health benefits: a more powerful heart, even more muscle, weight control, and so on. Just make sure to keep it on their level and not get too technical.

4.  Lead by example

You can't expect your kids to head out and play if you stay inside and watch TELEVISION. Kids resemble sponges in that they absorb everything you do and in a lot of cases wish to emulate you. Set a bad example and they will follow it just as they would if you set a great example. The option is yours.

5.  Supply opportunities to be active

If you make exercising fun, children won't even recognize they are doing it. Games like tag or hopscotch are fun to play. Both games get the heart rate up, the body moving and do not require much as far as equipment-- just some chalk for hopscotch.  You can even make an active game up on the fly. Get creative. As long as you're having fun nobody will care about how silly it may be or what rules you make up :)

Being a kid ought to be about going outside, playing and having fun making memories. It should not be about sitting on the sofa seeing TV for hours on end. Your kids only have one opporutnity to be kids and you only have one opporutnity to be their parent while they are kids. Get them (and yourself) up, go outside and make happy memories while being active!
